Diplomatic representation
About the Dutch Embassy in Canberra
The Dutch Embassy in Canberra represents the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Australia.
It maintains diplomatic relations with the Australian government and represents Dutch interests in bilateral and international affairs.
The Netherlands and Australia cooperate across a range of political, economic, scientific, cultural and security-related matters.
Diplomatic representation in the capital
Canberra is the seat of Australia’s federal government. The presence of the Dutch Embassy allows the Netherlands to maintain direct diplomatic contact with Australian federal institutions and other international missions.
Diplomatic services versus consular services
An embassy’s diplomatic responsibilities are different from the public consular services used by travellers and citizens living abroad.
In Australia, the Dutch government separates these functions. The embassy is located in Canberra, while the Consulate-General in Sydney handles consular enquiries and many applications.
This distinction matters when arranging passports, visas, certificates or emergency travel assistance.
