Alternative application countries
Official application locations include:

- United Arab Emirates – Dutch Consulate-General in Dubai.
- The Netherlands – participating border municipalities.
Choose your application country carefully and check its entry requirements before travelling.

Confirm whether you qualify for VFS Global in Erbil or must apply at a Dutch mission abroad.
3. Attend Your Appointment
Bring the printed checklist, completed and signed application form, existing passports and supporting documents.
Proof of legal residence
Applicants must demonstrate that they legally reside in Iraq.
Depending on their circumstances, this may include a valid visa, a residence permit or, for dual Dutch-Iraqi nationals, a valid Iraqi passport or identity card.
Birth and marriage certificates
Civil-status documents may need legalisation or authenticity verification before they can be accepted for a Dutch travel document application.
Requirements depend on the document, country of issue and whether this is a first-time application.
Translation requirements
Documents in Dutch, English, German or French can be submitted. Other languages may require translation by a sworn translator.
Applications for children
Children must attend passport and identity card appointments in person.
Parental or legal guardian consent may be required depending on the child’s age and the type of document.
Applying at a border municipality
Dutch nationals living in Iraq can also apply for a passport or identity card at a participating border municipality in the Netherlands.
Important: the Dutch Consulate-General in Erbil does not accept regular passport or identity card applications at its own counter. Eligible applicants use VFS Global in Erbil. First-time, lost, stolen or expired-document cases require another authorised application location.
Short-stay visas
Applying for a Schengen Visa for the Netherlands in Iraq
Schengen visa applications in Iraq are subject to specific restrictions based on the purpose of travel.
Which applications can be submitted in Iraq?
Eligible residents of Iraq can apply through VFS Global in Baghdad or Erbil for specified purposes, including:
- Business travel or attending conferences.
- Official visits.
- Participation in a programme funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Eligible Nuffic MENA scholarship-related study.
Applicants must meet the requirements for the relevant visa category and must normally be resident in Iraq.
Tourism and visiting family
Applicants who intend to travel for tourism or to visit family or friends cannot use the ordinary Iraq-based application arrangement.
Instead, the official instructions direct them to an authorised visa application location in another country, such as Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon or Türkiye.
Before applying
Check whether you need a Schengen visa, confirm your primary destination and identify the location authorised to process your particular application.
1. Check Your Travel Purpose
Confirm that your category is accepted by a VFS Global application centre in Iraq.
2. Prepare Documents
Complete the official visa form and gather the supporting evidence from the relevant checklist.
3. Book with VFS Global
Arrange an appointment at an authorised application centre and confirm that it is operating.
Visa application timing
Schengen visa applications can generally be submitted up to six months before travel, or nine months for eligible seafarers.
Applicants should normally apply at least 15 calendar days before their intended departure, while allowing additional time for appointment availability and processing.
Attending the appointment
Applicants must attend in person, including children.
At the appointment, you submit your passport and supporting documents, provide fingerprints when required, answer questions about your journey and pay the applicable fees.
Application tracking
VFS Global provides a reference number that can be used to track the visa application.
Visa centre availability
Due to the situation in the Middle East, VFS Global application centres in Iraq may be temporarily closed or operating with restrictions.
Confirm the current opening status directly with VFS Global before making travel arrangements.
Important: applicants cannot assume that all Schengen visa purposes are accepted in Baghdad or Erbil. Business and certain official or funded travel categories are treated differently from tourism and family visits.
Residence and other visas
MVV, Caribbean Visas and Other Entry Procedures
MVV visa stickers
Applicants who have received a positive residence decision from the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) may need an MVV visa sticker.
The appropriate application location depends on the purpose of stay and the instructions in the IND approval letter.
Do not assume that an MVV appointment can be arranged at the temporarily closed embassy in Baghdad.
MVV and residence permit procedures
For eligible MVV and residence procedures requiring an appointment outside Iraq, the official instructions identify application locations in Iran, Jordan, Lebanon and Türkiye.
Always follow the location specified by the IND and current NetherlandsWorldwide guidance.
Airport transit visas
Applicants residing in Iraq who require an airport transit visa for the Netherlands are directed to an authorised application centre outside Iraq.
Published options include Iran, Jordan, Lebanon and Türkiye.
Caribbean visas
Short-stay and long-stay Caribbean visa applications are likewise directed to authorised application locations outside Iraq.
Entry requirements for the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom differ from the rules for the European Netherlands.
Lost or expired Dutch residence permits
If your Dutch residence permit has expired or been lost or stolen while you are in Iraq, you may need an entry visa to return to the Netherlands.
Follow the applicable NetherlandsWorldwide instructions and confirm the current application location before travelling.
Important: different types of visa require different locations. An IND approval letter and the official application instructions take precedence over general embassy contact information.
