Diplomatic representation

About the Netherlands Embassy Office in N’Djamena

The Netherlands maintains an embassy office in N’Djamena as its official diplomatic presence in Chad.

The office provides a point of contact for diplomatic communication and Dutch governmental interests in the country.

Embassy office rather than full embassy

Its services differ from those of a Dutch embassy with a regular consular section. In particular, residents of Chad cannot submit ordinary Dutch passport or identity card applications at this office.

Regional consular arrangements

Selected Dutch government services are provided by diplomatic missions in Egypt, Ethiopia or Nigeria.

For Schengen and airport transit visa applications, the French Embassy in N’Djamena acts as the designated application location.

Emergency assistance

One important service available through the Netherlands Embassy Office is arranging appointments for emergency Dutch travel documents.

Eligible Dutch nationals should contact the office by email and follow the instructions they receive.

Official Consular Appointment Procedures for Chad

Travel documents

Applying for a Dutch Passport or Identity Card if You Live in Chad

Dutch nationals living in Chad cannot submit regular passport or identity card applications at the embassy office in N’Djamena.

The official procedure identifies three alternative application locations in Africa.

Where to apply

Cairo, Egypt

Make an online appointment at the Dutch Embassy in Cairo.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Make an online appointment at the Dutch Embassy in Addis Ababa.

Lagos, Nigeria

Request an appointment at the Dutch Consulate-General in Lagos by emailing lag-ca@minbuza.nl.

Step 1: Prepare your personal checklist

Create a separate personal documents checklist for every passport or identity card application.

This checklist identifies the supporting documents you must bring to your appointment.

Step 2: Prove legal residence in Chad

You must provide evidence that you reside legally in Chad.

Depending on your circumstances, this may be:

  • A valid visa and supporting documents.
  • A valid residence permit.
  • A valid passport or identity card issued by your country of residence.

For a child’s first Dutch passport or identity card, a birth certificate can serve as proof of legal residence.

Step 3: Prepare civil-status documents

Birth certificates and marriage certificates issued in Chad must be legalised when required for the Dutch application.

Documents issued in another country may be subject to a different legalisation procedure.

Document translations

Documents written in Dutch, English, German or French can be submitted.

Documents in other languages should be translated by a sworn translator when required.

Step 4: Arrange your appointment

After preparing your checklist and supporting documents, book an appointment at an authorised application location.

Make separate appointments if you are applying for both a passport and an identity card.

Step 5: Attend in person

All applicants must attend their appointment personally, including children.

Bring the printed checklist and the required original documents. Originals can normally be taken home after the application counter has checked them and made the necessary copies.

Applying in the Netherlands

Dutch nationals living in Chad can also apply for a passport or identity card at a participating border municipality in the Netherlands.

Receiving a new passport or ID card

The application location will notify you by email when your new travel document is ready.

The exact collection or delivery arrangements depend on whether you applied in Cairo, Addis Ababa or Lagos.

Returning your previous travel document

If you kept your previous passport or identity card during processing, you must return it when collecting the replacement.

If your new document is to be sent to you, the application location may require you to return the previous document before dispatch.

Collection deadline

Completed passports and identity cards must be collected or dispatched within three months after notification that they are ready.

Documents not collected or dispatched within that period are destroyed.

Important: no regular passport or identity card applications take place in N’Djamena. Check entry requirements for the country where you intend to submit your application.
