Dutch nationals living in Sweden can apply at the Embassy of the Netherlands in Stockholm. Depending on their circumstances, they may also apply at the Dutch embassy in Copenhagen or at an eligible Dutch border municipality.
Begin with the official passport and identity card application guide for Sweden.
Create a personal checklist for each applicant, gather the documents and make an appointment with the chosen application office.
All applicants must attend in person, including children. Separate appointments are required if applying for both a passport and an identity card.
Required Documents
Depending on your personal circumstances, the checklist may require:
- A completed, printed and signed passport or identity card application form.
- Your printed personal document checklist.
- Current and expired Dutch or foreign passports and identity cards.
- Proof of legal residence in Sweden.
- Birth, marriage or nationality documents where applicable.
- Multilingual forms or sworn translations when required.
- Parental or guardian consent documents for children, if applicable.
- A passport photograph meeting Dutch requirements.
Proof of Residence in Sweden
NetherlandsWorldwide normally requires an English-language extract from the Swedish population register, known as personbevis.
The extract must be signed and stamped by Skatteverket and be no more than three months old on the appointment date.
The specified document is Utdrag om folkbokföringsuppgifter – 120 med alla relationer.
You can request this extract from Skatteverket online, by telephone or through a service office. Check that you receive the required English version with the official signature and stamp.
If you also have Swedish nationality, a valid Swedish passport or national identity card may be accepted instead. A Swedish driving licence or an identity card issued by Skatteverket is not sufficient for this purpose.
Swedish Birth and Marriage Documents
Swedish birth and marriage records generally do not require legalisation when used for Dutch passport or identity card applications.
However, you may need a multilingual standard form or a sworn translation for documents issued only in Swedish.
Follow the requirements shown on your personal checklist before obtaining additional documents.
Collecting Your New Document
The embassy in Stockholm will notify you when your new passport or identity card is ready.
The published passport and identity card collection hours are:
- Monday: 12:00–12:30.
- Wednesday: 09:00–09:30.
No separate appointment is required during these periods. Check embassy closure dates before travelling from Gothenburg.
New documents must be collected or arranged for delivery within three months of notification.
Receiving Your Passport or ID Card by Post
The Sweden-specific application procedure allows eligible new passports and identity cards to be sent using Postnord.
Applicants must follow the embassy’s official mailing instructions, prepare the required postage label and pay postage costs.
Registered delivery is recommended because the shipment can be tracked.
If you no longer need your old passport, you can surrender it when applying. The new document may then be sent together with the invalidated old one.
If you need to keep your existing passport while the application is processed, you must return to the embassy to collect the new passport and have the previous document invalidated.
Postal delivery: eligibility depends on the official mailing and identity verification requirements. Confirm the arrangements with the embassy before submitting your application.
